The plot is surrounded by a dense forest of cork and holm oaks and by two watercourses, including the nearby Arraiolos stream. This setting favoured alluvial deposits that formed shallow soils with a sandy-clay to sandy-silt texture. Deeper down, a gravelly layer improves drainage and encourages root growth. The soils are of granitic origin and the variety planted is Petit Verdot, from a massal selection. The 1-hectare plot is trained on bilateral cordon and has a very low organic matter content (<1%).
