Description
The Vineyard
Planted in 2001, the Taco vineyard is one of the finest examples of dry-farmed viticulture at Tapada de Coelheiros. It lies at around 280 metres, at the foot of the Taco slope, facing mainly south.
The plot is surrounded by a dense forest of cork and holm oaks and by two watercourses, including the nearby Arraiolos stream. This setting favoured alluvial deposits that formed shallow soils with a sandy-clay to sandy-silt texture. Deeper down, a gravelly layer improves drainage and encourages root growth. The soils are of granitic origin and the variety planted is Petit Verdot, from a massal selection. The 1-hectare plot is trained on bilateral cordon and has a very low organic matter content (<1%). The vineyard has been farmed organically since 2017.
Winemaking
The grapes were hand-picked into 25 kg boxes and taken to the winery, where they were destemmed. Alcoholic fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at 25 °C. Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally in stainless steel, after which the wine was racked into barrels, where it aged for 18 months.
Tasting Notes
Deep colour. The nose shows great aromatic precision, with notes of ripe cherry and redcurrant, hints of blackcurrant and subtle touches of moss and forest floor. The palate has great concentration and depth, with a silky texture and firm yet finely integrated tannins. Ripe red fruit dominates the mid-palate, wrapped in earthy nuances and a delicate touch of dark chocolate. The finish is long, fresh and persistent.
